Sedation Dentistry

At Sharma Dental Center our sedation dentist, and clinic staff is skilled in sleep dentistry or sedation dentistry through medication to manage your dental anxiety, enable you to seek timely dental treatment, and make your dental procedure comfortable and stress-free.

We know that you may feel nervous about someone using sharp instruments to probe your mouth, fearful due to past negative experience, or the very thought of sitting on a dental chair for the first time makes you panic-stricken. Recognition your concerns, we offer different types and levels of sedation, from minimum to complete, as per the dental requirement and your level of comfort.

There’s no discomfort in many actual dental procedures such as dental fillings, and you won’t need more than a local anesthetic. Only for some specific dental procedures such as whole teeth replacement do we recommend the use of a general anesthetic.

We request you to inform us about the nature and level of your dental anxiety at the time of scheduling the initial dental appointment. Doing so will help us in managing your anxiety and administer the right kind of sedation before and during your dental procedure.

Levels Of Sedation

A dentist uses sedation of different levels depending on the patient’s ability to handle discomfort related to a particular procedure and the general anxiety level.

Minimal Sedation:

The patient is awake and relaxed.

“Conscious” or Moderate Sedation:

There is slurring while speaking, and you do not remember the majority of the procedure.

Deep Sedation:

You are almost unconsciousness, but can be awakened.

General anesthetic:

The patient is completely unconscious.

Types Of Sedation

The general rule is higher the complexity of the procedure, such as oral surgery, greater the level of sedation. But irrespective of the type of sedation, your sedation dentist will usually use a local anesthetic: a numbing medication for pain and reducing discomfort.

Inhaled Minimal Sedation:

The patient breathes nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” along with oxygen through a mask. The gas relaxes you but also wears off quickly. It’s the only type of sedation that does not forbid you from driving yourself to home after your procedure and is commonly used during the treatment of dental cavities.

Oral Sedation:

The dentist uses a sedative drug for about an hour before the procedure, and the degree of sedation can be controlled. It’s popularly used, and you will feel drowsy but will be awake, though some patients fall asleep during the procedure.

Intravenous (IV) Moderate Sedation:

The patient receives the sedative drug through a vein, and the level of sedation can be continuously adjusted.

Deep Sedation And General Anesthetic:

The dentist gives sedation drug to make you almost or completely unconscious during your procedure. The patient can’t be easily awakened until the effect of the anesthetic wears off or reversed through medication.
